Five somatic tools for AI-era anxiety
By Amir Alon, certified somatic coach trained in Somatic Experiencing® - 25 August 2026
Tools that change monthly. Roles that blur. A future nobody can describe with a straight face. If your work is being reshaped by AI, your nervous system has probably noticed - even on the days your calendar looks normal.
Why does AI uncertainty feel physical?
Your nervous system treats chronic uncertainty as a threat. It cannot tell the difference between "my industry might change" and "something is stalking me": both produce the same braced shoulders, shallow breath, and a mind that scans ahead on a loop. That is not weakness or bad attitude - it is biology doing its job with the wrong map.
The way through is not more analysis. Thinking harder about an unreadable future feeds the loop. The body needs a different signal: evidence, in the present moment, that the ground is still here.
Five small practices that help
1. Orient. When you notice the scanning mind, stop and let your eyes wander the room slowly - really look at five ordinary things. This is not a metaphor: orienting tells an alarmed nervous system that the immediate environment is safe, which is the information it actually lacks.
2. Feel your feet. Press both feet into the floor for thirty seconds and notice the contact. Uncertainty lives in the future; your feet are always in the present. This is the fastest route out of your head that exists.
3. Lengthen the exhale. Breathe in normally, then let the out-breath be longer and slower than the in-breath, a few times. The exhale is wired to the calming branch of your nervous system - you are not forcing calm, you are inviting it.
4. Name the sensation, not the story. Instead of "everything is changing and I will be left behind", try "tightness in my chest, about the size of a fist". Naming a sensation locates the experience in the body, where it can shift. The story has no size and no exit.
5. Do one thing with your hands. Make tea. Water a plant. Wash a dish slowly. Completing one small physical action gives the nervous system what an unreadable future cannot: a beginning, a middle, and an end.
When small practices are not enough
These tools help in the moment. If the bracing has become your baseline - sleep that does not come, a body that stays tense after years of talking about it - that pattern usually needs accompanied work, at the pace of your own system. That is what Somatic Experiencing® sessions are for: not analyzing the uncertainty, but changing how your body carries it.
These practices support wellbeing; they are not a substitute for medical or psychological care when that is needed.
